Dirt Squirrel Infiltrates DragCon UK 2020

We are so lucky to have a job that takes us to places all over North America, but it gets even more exciting when you explore cities and events across the pond.

We have taken part in RuPaul’s DragCon LA & NYC since their inception and it’s always a light-hearted, attention grabbing, show-stopping and colourful event to be a part of. Not only does it provide a generous splash of “pink” starting with the welcoming runway carpet you get to strut down from the second you walk in, but also a safe space for people to express themselves in whatever way the want to. It is an experience in itself to see people’s creativity on full display and many times we find our jaws dropping on the floor, gagging on the eleganza before us.

This year, we had the opportunity to join in on the fun for the first ever, RuPaul’s DragRaceUK held at The Olympia. We were fortunate enough to have a corner booth along the pink carpet, right in front of the main stage where our friends constantly delivered us champagne. They joined us behind the booth for a little kiki and didn’t miss any of the action including two performances of “Break Up, Bye Bye” by the Frock Destroyers. Life complete.

There were some hiccups with the venue not letting all ticket holders in on the first day unfortunately, with thousands of people waiting outside for hours and some ticket holders never actually getting in. The lineups inside were not much better – it took us 1.5 hours to lineup for pizza for lunch. Each of us ended up eating a whole pizza to ourselves in fear that we would not get the chance to eat again! Just kidding, we’re being dramatic – we are just always that hungry. That being said, our experience with festivals is that the first year will inevitably have a lot of kinks to work out – similar to how we felt about the first one held in LA. It has only improved since then and expanded immensely in size, which is pretty awesome to see.

It was also pretty awesome to see our designs in the hands and down the pants of people in the UK! As a part of the commonwealth, we always enjoy the time spent with our fellow LGBTQ+ UK brethren and this was no exception. We can’t wait to come back and hopefully visit even more of you outside of London!
